Hanging the hammock indoors with Potenza hardware suspension - DIY!
Have you ever dreamt about a real siesta with a beautiful hammock swing in your home comfort?
Well, everyone deserves it! It doesn’t matter if you have a balcony, a spacious living room, an attic, or a small corridor. Every space can become your magic wonderland of calmness, joy, and happiness. In the next paragraphs, I will share with you the importance of the measurements that are significant to enjoy all the best from your siesta corner and also describe step-by-step how to approach mounting the hammock indoors. Through this blog post, I’m sharing with you my journey of rearranging the room that I spent most of the time in. I also hope to convince you that with a good vision and sincere intentions, you can do it yourself!
Knowing your walls
This factor indisputably determines where are you going to hang your hammock to do it safely. Some wall constructions are not suitable to hang anything at all, and I assume you know your walls! Each material the building is made off and each element that supports the construction from the inside, like wooden beams for example, is going to need a different approach in the matter of chosen tools and an appropriate hardware suspension. It’s also worth checking the walls with the stud finder before drilling, to avoid difficulties that may occur when interfering with the wall structures. In the end, who knows what’s in there? 👀
Methods & your vision
There are a few different ways of hanging the hammock indoors: from wall to wall, suspension on the beam or from the ceiling. Your choice should be determined by the wall/ceiling construction material and most important by your vision. Just like you know your walls, you know your needs. Relax, think & rethink your plan. I truly encourage you to a strategic approach, so you are 100% sure about creating a pleasant and functional space for your needs and your daily routine.
As you can see at the photo above my day room is quite spacious; however, a lot is going on over there and I wouldn’t like to clutter the room more than it is already. That’s why I have decided to hang my hammock from two different points just below the ceiling. My vision is to create a cosy, heartwarming corner in between the window recess. The way I’m planning to mount the hardware suspensions also seems to be the best solution for me, as I would not like to create additional lines that visually intersect the composition of the room on the eye level. It will be quite a functional solution to keep the smooth movement in the room, as I wouldn’t have to bend down each time I water my plants. Moreover, this spot by itself is just screaming for a hammock to be hung in there! I definitely would find it very attractive to spend some time in the hammock watching the sunset and being just “away” from the 1st part of my room where I work, paint and much, much more. If you like the idea of hanging the hammock from below the ceiling and your hammock-spot will be in the middle of the room, consider to mount the hardware suspension from the ceiling directly. There are some advantages of doing it this way, like using the eye hooks for the plant macramés, cat hammocks, swingasan chair or TRX straps.
Measurement formula = Perfect curve
A technical aspect that makes a difference between hanging the hammock across the walls at the waist height and just below the ceiling is the distance between the two points. Hanging the hammock from the ceiling height or from the ceiling directly, requires different measurements, and measurements are the keys to your comfort when lying on your hammock. That’s a gold proportion of the best siesta and the most attractive shape that your hammock may achieve. The higher you hang the hammock, the more you can adjust its shape. However, an important factor is the minimum and maximum length of the assembly lines you will use.
To calculate the minimum distance between two hammock arms, subtract 10% from the total length of the hammock. To calculate the height of suspension (Y), we divide the distance between two points (x) by two. Y= X/2
-
Check if you have enough space for your hammock & examine the following factors:
-
- Total hammock length
- 2x mounting ropes length
- Dedicated space length between two points
- Dedicated height of mounting the hardware suspension
- The height at which your hips are located to allow you to freely enter and exit the hammock
- The suspension angle should be between 15° and 20°
-
Considering the above-mentioned aspects, I will briefly present you my calculations:
-
- Total hammock length: 346 cm
- 2x mounting ropes length: Potenza indoor mounting suspension is regulated. Its shortest length is 85 cm, and longest 135 cm each side.
- Dedicated space length between two points: 346 cm—10%= 311.4 cm. My wall distance is 403 cm, so we have the minimum! 🙌
- Dedicated height of mounting the hardware suspension: Y= 403/2= 201.5 cm
This height is a minimum for my calculations; however, I’m using regulated ropes I can easily regulate the hammock length. That is why I’m going to mount the hardware suspension a little higher. In the matter of the fact, I even couldn’t mount my hardware suspension at this height because of its minimum length, which is 85 cm each side. That is why I’m going to “extend” the distance between two walls by mounting the hammock higher.
- The height at which your hips are located to allow you to freely enter and exit the hammock: 90 cm
- The suspension angle should be between 15° and 20°
Tools
For my hammock hanging experience, I will need:
- Meter
- Pencil
- Hammer drill & drill bits
- 2x hardware suspension with screws and lines (available separately)
- Hammock fabric https://potenzahammocks.com/product/medellin/
- Ladder
- Vacuum cleaner
According to the hardware suspension, I highly recommend paying attention to the capacity of it when buying. If you are going to use a plate as I do, remember, the bigger the plate is, the better the strength is. Note that the screws must be long & sturdy. On the market, there are also chemical anchor cages or single-eye bolts. Regarding wall diversity, pick a suitable hardware suspension for your needs. I like the one that I’m going to use, as it is designed for hammocks, and it comes already with the line regulation. It all looks very accurate, and it is simply comfortable for my needs.
… Let’s drill!
- Mark the drill holes
- Adjust the drill bit to the size of the screws (both should size numbers)
- The holes should be drilled at a slight angle approx. 30 degrees
- Place the dowels in the holes
- Put the plate on and tighten the screws carefully to not twist the screws
- Repeat the process with the 2nd plate
- Fasten the hammock arms with a carabiner on each side
Warning:
You carry out all renovation and installation works in your flat or house at your own risk. Due to the multitude of factors determining the safety of the hammock mounting, I cannot take responsibility for its effect. In case of any doubts, remember, you don’t have to do it by yourself <3 Organise a local handyman or call your best friend to assist you!
By writing this blog post, I intend to encourage you to fulfil this dream of an idyllic life in the hammock.
